Cherokee Creek Trestle

Work has begun on my west approach Cherokee Creek Trestle, which will be a focal point on the new layout. The trestle will be approximately 4.5 real feet in length and build as a diorama, lift up/duckunder as you enter my layout room. Progress is slow but coming together! ..

A panorama view of the scene, which is 4 feet in length, shows the completed deck and bents. There are still NBW details to add to the deck.

Coming from diorama building where I used foam insulation as the scenery base, I wanted to try my hands at a new technique (for me), cardboard webbing. Simply, cardboard strips are glued into place creating the basic landforms and Woodland Scenics plaster cloth is laid over the top and allowed to dry. I'm finding this process easier than I thought and I like the results. The photos below will give you and idea of how the scene will look when finished.

Now that most of the structure is complete, I started painting the base a brown/green color.

Dirt and stone has arrived from the Copperopolis/Angels Camp California area and starting to add a new dimension to the diorama. Here, the dirt is drying and paint still needs to be added under the bridge. Once dry, this will be covered with static grass and shrubs (maybe sneak in an Oak tree). This scene will get wrapped up with water added to the creek and the remaining bolts added.

I try to keep as much information near by while trying to hold true to the area I am modeling. Here is a quick view of the real Cherokee Creek area.
