Cherokee Creek Trestle

Work has begun on my west approach Cherokee Creek Trestle, which will be a focal point on the new layout. The trestle will be approximately 4.5 real feet in length and build as a diorama, lift up/duckunder as you enter my layout room. Progress is slow but coming together! ..

I've turned my attention to building the plate girder. I decided to scratch build it using sheet and strip styrene. Later I will write an article on the build in greater detail.

Rivets are decals from Micro Mark. Archer sells them as well. They are easy to use and look great!

I want the two girder supporting bents to have their concrete footings showing. I made castings from scrap wood I had laying around, added my typical sand/plaster to a bowl along with water and India ink. The spalling was from the plaster sticking to the forms. I then used a wire brush to poke at the areas until I was satisfied with the look. When dry, I will sand down the high areas and color as described here; http://shortlinemodelers.com/layouts-dioramas/scenery/creating-realistic....

The west approach deck and girder are completed. All rail spiked and weathered. All that's left is to add the remaining nut-bot-washer details and start on the east approach! Originally I was using roof brown to weather my rail, however, I wanted to give AK Interactive Rust effects a try. ( http://ak-interactive.com/v2/?product=rust-effect-colors ) I use their darkest chipping color over-sprayed on a base coat of dark rust. I then used a medium rust powder washed onto the rails. Sealed and then used a very thin wash of AK-Interactive Track Wash. I dusted on real dirt over the entire deck and sealed.

Here is an update to the project, finally!
Now that the girder is completed, I have been working on the east approach deck and getting measurements for the bents.

Using .010 styrene to represent steel plates to sit on top of the bents that the girder will rest on. Paint was from AK Interactive as was the rust powder.
