EMD GP9 1:48 Scale

I'm not sure if I took on more than my skills will allow, however, this is my next large project; and EMD GP9 Phase I. This build will be totally freelanced for my railroad set in 1974. I am planning on only having one on my railroad unless I find that it is easier to build than first thought.

The plan is as follows:

  1. Scale underframe - The entire underfame will be built per prototype photos using sheet and strip styrene. As much pipe and electrical detail (that I can find) will be included.
  2. Battery powered - My plan is to battery power all my head-units so I do not have to wire a layout. I will be using the North West Short Line Stanton unit which is a remote control DCC set up. This will include sound.
  3. Motors - As of now, my plan is to use the North West Short Line, Magic Carpet drives, one for each axel, as the prototype.
  4. Full cab interior.
  5. Lastly, I will be scratchbuilding all exterior grills.

Spent a few moments at the workbench this morning to finish up the frame structure. Supports will go in next followed by coupler mounts.

It's looking really good Shawn. Interesting to see how you are achieving the look of the frame. Thanks for sharing.

Here are some shots of the web that I'm using for reference as I build my underframe.

Here is the underframe with beams in place. The final details will be added to the frame and then coupler pockets. The last photo shows me adding some brass wire which will be air, fuel and electrical lines.

Shawn;
Loving the look of the frame. Just rewatched your video on trucks again yesterday. Very good and well thought out.
